HK$699 – forget Pokemon hunting and egg hatching. Hatchanimals are taking the market by storm this Christmas. The hottest toy this year has just arrived in Hong Kong’s Toys R Us. Whilst the toy has already been launched in stores like Amazon, Target and Wal-Mart, stocks have recently run dangerously low as Christmas draws nearer. In fact if you are in the UK, you would have better luck catching an extinct Dodo (according to the UK Sun Tabloid) rather than get your hands on a Hatchanimal this Christmas.
Priced at GBP60 in the UK, this toy created by Spin Master Corp is for kids 5+ and up and to hatch the animal in the egg, just gently rub the shell of the egg, it sometimes takes up to 40 minutes, for it to crack open and reveal a bird like creature which somewhat reminds me of a better-looking version of a Furby. The idea is to teach children about care and nurturing and much like a Tamagotchi, the child spends time nurturing it through its 3 stages of life till it matures into adulthood. The Hatchimal responds to the power of human touch and begins to hatch and communicate through taps, pecks, lights and sound; which Hatchimal is inside is only revealed when it hatches. Five different species to collect – Pengualas, Draggles, Owlicorns, Burtles, or Bearakeets – and the lucky owner won’t know what they have until it hatches. The toy – which once hatched will learn to walk, talk and play games.
