I haven’t been to The Line at Shangri-La Singapore for quite a while now, so when I popped into the restaurant earlier this week, I was pretty surprised at how busy it was. As it turned out, Tuesdays are its busiest midweek, as The Line does a $98++ buffet dinner with free flow wines, beers and prosecco. That evening, the restaurant was full.
With National Day round the corner, Chef de Cuisine Vincent Wong has added some patriotic flavours to the spread. At the sushi counter, pick up some chicken rice maki roll — essentially a good moist chicken rice with a slice of roast stacked into a neat mouthful. Go for the satay, and the curries and pilaf at Indian food station, laksa prepared a la minute, oyster omelette and nasi lemak too. The all popular fresh seafood was a pretty impressive spread, too.
Save plenty of space for dessert. The cake station is incredibly pretty with all sorts of dainty sweets and kueh. Don’t forget to try the chendol bubbles, another specialty just for national day.
But if you are a durian lover, the durian station in a pushcart outside the restaurant is a must-do. You get fresh durian there, opened in front of you, by a durian master. Dig into as many mao shan wang and D24 durians as you can stomach, as well as other local fruits like jakfruit and mangosteen.
Opposite it is a retro ‘sweet stall’ with all the old fashioned snacks you can think of — from those red-wrapped Made in China chocolate wafers from the old school tuckshops, to kacang puteh, murukku, sweets and chips and even the paper balls we had to blow up to play with. Other nostalgic games like chapteh and kuti-kuti are also part of the dinner experience.
The Line’s dinner buffet will be incorporating these special Singapore touches until 14 August. in the dinner buffet are available from now until 14 August.
Dinner buffet prices range from S$79++ to $108++ depending on the day of the week. The best deal is on Tuesday at $98++ with enhanced seafood selection, house-pour sparkling, red and white wines, draft beer, soft drinks and chilled juices.
